Official Trailer:
Take a serious social issue and use it as a star vehicle, to sell the star, this has become a Kollywood trademark. In the process, nuance, and logic goes out the window. Insult the victims (of the issue) and the audience. I guess this trend started with Gentleman. We have seen it in so many movies in last 2 decades including Kaththi, Sivaji, Sarkar, and now we get Bhoomi. There is a standard template these movies follow.
- Victim(s) commit self-immolation or slit their throats ✓
- All poor people are good ✓
- All rich people are bad ✓
- Anyone in coat-suit is bad ✓
- Anyone to do with government are corrupt and evil ✓
- Corporate is a bad word ✓
- Indian corporates are good (sometimes. To move the story ahead) ✓
- Villain is either from north India or looks like a foreigner ✓
- Mention of organic forming, methane, cola, hydro-carbon ✓
- Throw around facts and numbers – started with Ramana and don’t see an end to it ✓
- Public change opinion within 0.001 sec after watching a social media video ✓
- Throw in Tamilzhanda, Tamil-pride in the mix ✓
Of course, to give credit to Bhoomi writers, they have added few more to the above list.
- You can cause autism to someone through coffee within few seconds ✔
- Carry around the virus and inject people with it in a crowd – just like that ✔
- Writing is just stitching together 100s of Whatsapp forwards (only half credit here….Sarkar did it earlier) ✔
- Farmers don’t know what they are doing….hero has to show them how to make 6 lakhs from 2 acres of land ✔
- Hybrid is a bad word too ✔
- Be careful when you drink coffee next time ✔
- 13 families control this world ✔
Insults and dumbing down doesn’t stop here. Bhoomi has pushed it to Mars. Final burning the goods scene, not sure whether they took the message of the current leader really seriously or making fun of him….only Bhoominathan knows. On how they view the farmers though, Richard and Bhoominathan resemble our government and courts. Maybe there is a message.
