Doctor
Official Trailer:
Doctor follows the similar template as Kolamavu Kokila, Director Nelson Dilipkumar’s previous movie, where a bunch of misfits come together to save the kidnapped child. Like Kolamavu Kokila, there is inventiveness in scenes and staging (metro fight scene is superbly done), absurdities (infusing sardonic humor in grave situations), and a good dose of weirdness. Hero trope gets subverted, there is no mass entry scene, hero shown as an indifferent and withdrawn character, goes through rejection. Obligatory love song gets done with and moved out of the way in the beginning itself. While the storyline does keep us engaged, there is no tempo, it feels like a flatline with no momentum build up. Enjoyable movie, but a little bit more punch would have made the movie much more entertaining.
The Harder They Fall
Official Trailer:
The Harder They Fall is a Western set in a BlackVerse. Casting, Excellent performances, great music, well set action pieces, stylish film making, and fast paced direction makes this an entertaining ride. Storyline is nothing new, age old revenge drama (Nat Love as a child was marked by outlaw Rufus Buck, Rufus murders Nat Love’s parents and put a cross mark on Nat Love’s forehead, and yes, Nat Love takes revenge with bunch of additional characters) but with an interesting twist at the climax. What worked for me is the memorable side characters, lack of binary good or bad, punchy dialogues, and impressive action sequences (I said that already, right?). And interesting touches like Marysville town where everyone is white including the buildings (painted white) and the sand 😄
Wrong Turn
Official Trailer:
I have not watched earlier Wrong Turn movies, so can’t say how this latest installment (or is this a reboot?) compares with earlier ones. Wrong Turn follows the conventional horror genre trope, good looking college kids go on a trek in a dense Appalachian Trail and gets killed one by one, but storyline packs in fresh surprises. There is good mix of newness (modernity meeting The Foundation, a community of people who have secluded themselves for 100s of years), liberal and prejudiced protagonists, phobias, scares, and gore. The second climax was chilling and worked. Wrong Turn is a decent horror flick, go for it if you like horror genre and looking for something different.
