News of actor Rajesh’s sad demise took me down the memory lane. Reminiscing about his movies – Achamillai Achamillai, Kanni Paruvathile, Antha 7 natkal, Sathya, Veli, Mahanadhi – movies where I can recollect his character. One thing led to another, and I landed on Kanni Paruvathile. I don’t recollect the story much, but the songs are still fresh in my memory. It was a successful album when the movie came out in 1979. Kanni Paruvathile surely is one of Shakar-Ganesh’s blockbuster hits.
Nadaya Mathu:
Movie opens with this fast track which I would say is the pioneer of what we call kuthuPaattu or Item number today. Fast beats, Malaysia Vasudevan and Janaki rock as playback singers, and an energetic performance from the dancers. Dancers are Prabhu Deva of 70s!! There are no quick cuts. For a dance performance these are long sequences. Hats off to the dancers. This song used to boom from speakers in temple festivals and public functions that time.
Aavaram poomeni
Watching the song video teleports you to that time. Half sarees, ribbons, colors, claps, and chorus – are like a time capsule. Song has a fun and teasing feeling to it. Janaki gets in to the spirit of the song. 2:42 – 3:05 – her voice range gives you goosebumps.
Pattu Vanna Rosavam – S.Janaki
Pattu Vanna Rosavam – Malaysia Vasudevan
No one should be asked to choose between the two versions. It is a punishment. Both are great with conveying the feeling of pain and sadness. it will make a connect with anyone who hears it. Pulamaipithan’s lyrics tugs at your heart strings. Hard to describe it in words, it kindles something in you.
Adi Ammadi
At the bottom in my list compared to above ones. Still has the quality to transport you that decade. We don’t see those extreme close-up shots of face now-a-days.
Pattu Vanna Rosavam is one song I keep going back to.
