Official Trailer:

After watching the movie what stood out for me was Sundari’s character, from here onwards referred as Soori. While the story is about Sooran, genuinely heartening to see the effort that has gone in to give equal weightage to Soori’s role. A woman with a dream, a career ambition. A woman of conviction. Yes, we see them around us, in our family, in our work place, and in our society. Then why I am going gaga over Soori’s arc in Soorarai Pottru. We have been conditioned so much by Kollywood, in their writing there is not much space for woman, when they do get it is filled with loosu ponnu, MPDG, mother, or vamps. Rarely we do get a woman centric movie but they fall under high achieving, setting a high bar for woman, with see I am giving you a woman centric movie message in neon lights. In this toxic masculine driven Kollywood universe, Soori of Soorarai Pottru comes as a breath of fresh air and ray of hope. What should have been a normal affair stands out, tell me about it. Loved the whole opening stretch with stereotypes turned on its head – Aan parkkum padalam during funeral procession (auspicious time?), Soori’s comebacks to Maran and to her mom. Thanks to the staging, dialogues, and the actors, they come across as natural. Surprises kept coming in Soori-Maran thread – delaying the marriage for career, three pre-conditions, business deal, etc. A big thanks to director Sudha Kongara. And to Aparna Balamurali, she hits it out of the park.

OK, I hear you? How is the movie? The thread of Nedumaran’s, the Sooran, struggle to fly planes for the masses, is a mixed bag. It is an inspirational story no doubt, but to satisfy the masses narration falls in to usual kollywood mass movie traps, rich people are bad, poor are good, one dimensional villain(s), logic defying melodrama just to pull the heartstrings (kids breaking their piggybank to contribute to multi-crore need, really?). Climax even though doesn’t end in a real high, I felt the montage shots towards the end went well with director’s intention, it is triumph of the masses, Sundari, mother, not just the hero.
