Lift

Official Trailer:

If one can ignore the first 15-20mts and the unconvincing climax, the 1:45mts mid-portion is an engaging and well-made horror movie – skilfully staged and doesn’t resort to cheap jump thrills. Setup, camera work, BGM, and performances (convincing performance from Kavin) come together to give us the thrills. Considering the creativity and effort that has gone in the horror portion, it is surprising how the team missed the opening setup and the climax. Why the ghost picks Guru and Harini? Because of the role they play in the office, TL and HR? Lift does fall into good time pass movie category.

#Home

Official Trailer:

#Home is a warm, light-hearted, feel-good movie about digital generation gap, and family relationships. There are handful of good moments we can connect with, resonates with our real-life relationships. Momentum does sag in between but what keeps us engaged is the wonderful performance from Indrans as Oliver Twist, the protagonist. As the cliché goes, Indrans makes us feel he has lived the role. While Oliver Twist’s struggles with smartphone makes us laugh, they also point to the painful digital gap between generations – what is intuitive for one is not so for the other. The final twist may come across as convenient, but the screenplay does set the stage earlier with details not being observed by us (wristwatch sequence between psychologist and Suryan, and the drawing has been there on the book cover all along). And hey, miracles do happen in relationships, right?

Rame Aandalum Raavane Aandalum

Official Trailer:

Yet another movie where a good premise is wasted due to lazy writing. What bothers us is that movie has a great premise, and it would have made an interesting and engrossing movie in the hands of a good writer and director – media’s frenzy for breaking and sensational news, real stories never get the spot in the rush for sensational news, and short attention span. Kollywood needs to get out of the belief that spouting messages and one-liners every five minutes will make it a good movie even if it doesn’t fit the conversion. Please watch Mandela, Pariyerum Perumal, Maadathy to study how to weave in social issues seamlessly into the narration without resorting to preachy approach.
